Idomeneus

The Trojan War Hero and King of Crete with Courage and Consistency

Idomeneus was the king of Crete, son of Deucalion, and grandson of Minos. He was one of the brave heroes of the Trojan expedition and was among those who took part in manning the Trojan Horse. According to Homer, Idomeneus returned to Crete without any adventures. However, another tradition mentions that during his return from Troy, he encountered a storm.

At that time, he promised that if he reached his homeland alive, he would sacrifice to the god Poseidon the first creature he met. Unfortunately, he met his son, but he remained faithful to his promise and sacrificed him. This act provoked the anger of the other gods, who sent a plague to his land. Therefore, the inhabitants were forced to exile him.

In literature, he appears in works such as Homer's "Iliad" and Virgil's "Aeneid."
