Staphylos

The Myth of the God Dionysus and Eternal Wine in Greek Mythology

Staphylos was born 3,500 years ago in Crete as the son of Theseus and Ariadne. Due to the colonial policy of the Minoan kings, he found himself on Peparethos (modern-day Skopelos). There, he engaged in the cultivation of vineyards and the production of wine, creating the island's renowned wine reputation, which still endures today.

Besides being an excellent wine producer, Staphylos was also an equally persistent drinker. This led to his being referred to as the son of the god Dionysus in Greek mythology.

The tomb of Staphylos, discovered in the late 1930s by archaeologist Nikolaos Platon, is located on Skopelos, in one of the most beautiful spots on the island, next to a beach that, over the years, has taken his name!
