Orestes

The mythical hero driven by vengeance and the pursuit of justice

Orestes was born from the union of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra and was the brother of Iphigenia, Electra, and Chrysothemis. When his mother murdered his father, Electra took Orestes and transported him to Phocis for safety. There, he was hosted by his uncle, Strophius, and formed a legendary friendship with his cousin, Pylades, the son of Strophius.

Orestes lived in Phocis for eight years and then returned to Mycenae with Pylades to avenge Agamemnon's death. He killed Clytemnestra and her lover, Aegisthus. However, after the murder, he was relentlessly pursued by the Furies, the goddesses of vengeance. He could find no peace anywhere.

Eventually, his case was tried before the court of the Areopagus, with the support of Athena/Minerva, and only then did Orestes find peace. Additionally, there are other versions of the myth that describe how Orestes was purified, such as the one that mentions he found peace only after reuniting with his sister Iphigenia.
